Mise-en-Scene and lighting ideas

for my front cover I want to use a plain backdrop as this creates focus on the artist rather than than the Mise-en-Scene itself.

A reason for using a plain backdrop is so that the audience knows that the main focus of the magazine is on this artist and the artist alone. It also creates the audiences main focus to be this artist too.

To create a theme of my front cover and magazine in general my artist will have a prop such as either a microphone or guitar to show that the feature person on the front cover is a musician and it also makes the audience focus on the actual artist and the guitar or microphone rather than the backdrop.

I am going to use a simple lighting to reflect the mood of the magazine. I am going to light only the face as this is the main focus of my magazine as my artist will be a recognizable artist therefor the face is all that is needed  to be lit to show that my magazine will be based on him and him alone. Although the shot that will be taken will be either a medium close up or a close up shot.

Prices

NME  is £2.20  as well as Kerrang and MOJO magazine is £4.60
As long as my magazine costs less than NME or Kerrang or about the same it will still be a competitive seller on shelves. mojo magazines are more expensive as it is a longer lasting and a bigger magazine than NME and Kerrang. In future if my magazine was to grow I would be able to change the price to a higher amount as once there are casual readers of the magazine they will not mind paying a bit more.

In the most recent top 20 chart from BBC radio 1 there is only one song that fits into my desired genre being Indie which is 'The Lumineers-Hey Ho'. This is because chart music is usually mainstream music, because this type of music is the most popular it means i will have a more alternative audience but also have a smaller audience to attract.

My chosen genre.

Genre

The genre I’ve decided to go for is going to be MOD/Indie; this is because it’s the style of music I like therefore I know more about the artists included in the genre and the style of which I need to base my models on.

Bands that fit into the genre I’ve decided on consist of bands such as ‘The Libertines’ ‘oasis’ ‘arctic monkeys’ ‘beady eye’. These bands are more indie than MOD as they fit the main conventions of the genre by the way they present themselves in both their style and lyrics, these bands are seen as more mainstream indie as they’re signed to a label whereas indie would typically be seen as unlabelled bands.

Today, music is one of the few ways where people connect with each other  without the use of language. It is one way cultures can identify themselves, and communicate with each other to find common ground. Indie music relates to this as through the tone of which the musics played and the the type of singing voice used with most indie bands it connects them all together into its own culture.

The genre started off in the 1980’s or that’s when the term was first used, bands that formed the genre were bands such as The Jam and The rat-pack.

Initial Ideas

 Lighting
-                 Colour filter
-                 Use to create focus
-                 Simple lighting etc. (no                  filters)

       Mise En Scene
-          A photo-shoot with an abandoned background to show loneliness and his new start as a solo artist.
-          A plain background again to connote his solo career and him being alone.

Costumes
-          Skinny items of clothing rather than baggy items.
-          A trench coat
-          Desert boots

Target audience
-          An older audience than NME
-          A younger audience than NME
-          The same aged demographic as NME
I feel that my magazine should intentionally just apply to the same demographics of NME as this is a good wide audience.

Style of music/genre
The style of music and genre is definitely going to be Indie/ Mod music as this is the genre I enjoy   personally and I know most about.

Colour schemes
Red, white and blue as these are the colours used on the MOD target and are traditionally recognised to be a part of the MOD branding.
