Target audience and Audience research

Target Audience

Since my magazine will be a music magazine comparable to NME the target audience I’m going to go for is going to be a similar demographic which is people ages 17-30. Even though NME is a unisex magazine it is definitely male dominated with a 66% of its reader’s male, I want my magazine to be more attracting to females as well as male with less of a gap but because females psychographics are usually to like pop/chart music rather than indie/alternative rock music on which my magazine will be based.

Although the working demographic doesn’t really affect the target audience as the psychographics can be the same whatever the employment status, it is still important to know about demographics as if you used a particular type of vocabulary it may turn away people of higher class, and vice-versa with the lower class. This can be resolved by either using a mixture of both lower and higher class vocabulary, or decide which class you definitely want your magazine to attract. In my opinion NME try to base their target audience on psychographics rather than demographics.

For advertisements in my magazine I will be wanting to put in adverts for things such as ‘win festival tickets’ and ‘sales in guitar shops’ this is because since the age demographic is within the age of students they will typically not have much money, therefor want to save as much as they can to do with things they love, in this case, music.
